Description
Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland is the 13th title in the Atelier series and the final instalment in the Arland trilogy. The player controls Meruru, the princess of the Kingdom of Arland, who was originally supposed to become the apprentice of Totori, the heroine of the previous game. However, her father sets high demands: she is only allowed to continue learning alchemy if she manages to develop Arls so that it becomes part of Arland.

The game spans a period of three years, and after each year, progress (population and expansion) is measured against a series of goals. The way to meet these requirements is to participate in typical RPG activities: accepting quests, travelling across a world map to locations that are more or less far away (additional locations open over time) and fighting enemies. In addition to mandatory tasks, there are also a number of optional quests and boss battles. When it is time to expand Arls, Meruru can choose which building will be constructed next. Each building grants a different permanent bonus, but by the end of the game, every building will be constructed once the highest expansion rate is reached.

As with all games in the series, the focus is on alchemy: a lot of time is spent acquiring ingredients to craft items such as armour, weapons or other specialities. The only way to obtain these items is to use the predefined recipes, as merchants only sell ingredients – the better these are, the better the item will be. In enemy territory, Meruru and her party of adventurers encounter enemies that must be defeated in normal turn-based combat. While her two companions use the usual mix of physical attacks and magic, Meruru is the only one who can use items. There is no permanent death: if all party members are defeated, they wake up back home a few days later.

The main challenge is that each action takes a certain amount of time. There are multiple endings that depend on Meruru's success with her mandatory and optional objectives.
