Description
In 2012, a seemingly ordinary bartender named Desmond Miles is abducted by a mysterious organisation. His captors attach Desmond to a strange device called the "Animus", which allows him access to the memories of his ancestor, an assassin named Altaïr. For some reason, reconstructing Altaïr's memories is of crucial importance to the abductors.
Once Desmond gains access to Altaïr's memories, he can experience the events in the Holy Land in 1191, at the time of the Third Crusade. Al Mualim, the leader of the Assassins, orders Altaïr to kill nine prominent historical figures who allegedly ensured that war and corruption rule over the Holy Land.
For most of the game, the player controls Altaïr; however, it becomes clear that controlling him is part of Desmond's experience. The player also has the option to control Desmond between his sessions in the "Animus".
The most innovative feature of the game is the freedom of choice and movement. Every architectural detail, such as window ledges, carvings in stone or wooden poles, can be used to move along the walls. This allows the player intense chase sequences when he happens to be pursued by guards.
There are several ways to achieve your goal in the game. By eavesdropping, interrogating and pickpocketing, you can find out information about your next target. Based on this information, you can then decide whether to attack the targets with a full frontal assault or with a well-placed throwing knife from the cover of the rooftops.
Depending on your choice, you'll need to deal with the citizens and knights of the cities, who become suspicious when a disguised person is seen on the rooftops or near mission targets. There are several situations where you can disappear into the crowd. With a bit of luck, you can eliminate your target without anyone looking in your direction. Altaïr has a small but effective arsenal of weapons, such as swords and throwing knives, and can learn new combat skills to assist him on his mission.
