Animals of Prehistoric Times is a 170-page large-format (approx. 26x35cm) book, bound in full cloth with a colour dust jacket. The 60 full-page colour illustrations were painted by the Czech artist Zdenek Burian, the text is by Josef Augusta. The book is in good condition with light signs of use, the dust jacket is also well preserved with a few flaws at the edges.

6 of these large-format, magnificent colour volumes were published in the 1960s by Artia Verlag in Prague and were released there simultaneously in several languages (Czech, German, English, French, Spanish). Animals of Prehistoric Times and People of Prehistoric Times can still be found today, if you bring a bit of patience to the search. These two books were also often released as licensed editions by other publishers. In doing so, only the publisher details in the imprint were changed, and sometimes different images were used for the dust jackets. The Book of Mammoths and Colossi of Prehistoric Continents and Seas are considerably rarer. Probably the rarest is Saurians of the Primeval Seas. The somewhat smaller book Flying Saurians and Primeval Birds is rare, but does turn up occasionally. All 6 books share the fantastic and impressive illustrations of Zdenek Burian (1905-1981), who captured his visions on canvas with striking expressiveness. For a long time, his visual visions shaped the perception of dinosaurs in Europe.
