Bart Simpson goes into a video game store and buys a new, extremely violent game called Grand Theft Scratchy, which is promptly confiscated by his mother Marge. Suddenly, a manual for a video game lands right in front of him. As if by magic, after reading the manual, members of the Simpson family discover that each of them possesses a unique superpower. However, playing with these powers attracts the attention of the alien Kang and Kodos, who decide to conquer the Earth. Now the unusual superheroes must not only protect the city of Springfield from an alien attack, but also discover the real reason for their newly acquired powers and perhaps even for their own existence. The Simpsons Game is a 3D action game with jump and run and light puzzle elements based on the long-running animated series. The game is divided into sixteen episodes, each containing cutscenes reminiscent of the original Simpsons television series. Each episode takes place in a different setting; some scenarios are set in Springfield, while others take the player to meta-virtual worlds. Some of the episodes parody a popular game or genre and have names like Medal of Homer or Neverquest. In each phase, two members of the Simpson family must work together to reach the goal. Players must switch back and forth and use the unique abilities of each family member to complete the level. Most versions of the game allow cooperative play with two players. The four controllable characters each have their own unique abilities that can be used in combat, puzzle solving, or exploration. Homer can expand into a rolling blob or inflate himself with helium and hover for a while; later he learns some additional transformation abilities. Bart can transform into Bartman and use a grappling hook to reach certain areas, as well as move upwards in air currents using his cape. Lisa's main ability is called "Hand of Buddha", with which she can mainly move around large objects; she can also play her saxophone to stun or confuse enemies. Finally, Marge can use her megaphone to gather people and control their actions, as well as send the small Maggie into crawl spaces that only she can access. Some of these abilities have limited use and must either be recharged or refilled with special items, while others are only available at certain trigger points. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions also feature free gameplay - exclusively in these versions, player characters can leave the Simpson house between missions and move freely through virtual Springfield. Well-known landmarks (such as Moe's Tavern, etc.) are present and can also be explored. These locations may contain additional dialogue and events.
