Swamp Thing is a platform game based on the DC Comics character. The Game Boy version was released in conjunction with the same-named NES game and features a unique design and a series of levels. Players control Swamp Thing, who must venture out into the world to fight Dr. Arcane. Arcane plans to release a serum into the atmosphere that will transform all humans into mutated creatures called Un-Men. Swamp Thing must not only stop Arcane, but also repair the environmental damage caused by the villain and his henchmen. The game consists of four levels: at the start of the game, players can choose to begin in the desert, arctic or forest, all of which (in any order) must be completed before the final level opens. In each level, players encounter various wild animals controlled by Arcane that they can defeat with a shooting attack. Firing a shot reduces Swamp Thing's life energy—it's a good idea to catch the shot as it bounces back to regain it. Collecting water symbols also restores life energy. In addition to life energy, there is a second gauge that slowly depletes automatically—it represents environmental health and can be replenished by helping friendly animals (such as righting an overturned turtle) or by using a special recycling attack to recycle litter scattered throughout the levels. At the end of each level, a mighty boss awaits you. By defeating the boss, Swamp Thing gains a new power, such as invisibility. However, the powers only work when he is standing still.
