How to find the right PSA card

Decide on a grade

The PSA grade describes the condition from 1 to 10. There are often big price differences between neighbouring grades, so it's worth deciding in advance which condition really matters to you.

Read the label

The label shows the year, set, card number, Pokémon, grade and certification number. This also tells you whether the language and edition are right, for example whether it's a 1st Edition.

Check the certificate

Every certification number can be looked up in PSA's online verification tool. There you see the card and grade exactly as PSA recorded them, and can compare both with the photo in the shop.

What a PSA Graded Card is

PSA stands for Professional Sports Authenticator, a US grading company that has been examining trading cards since 1991. During grading, a card is checked for authenticity, its condition is rated on a scale from 1 to 10, and the card is then sealed in a plastic holder known as a slab. A label inside the slab records which card it is and what grade it received.

For you as a buyer, that solves a concrete problem. With an ungraded card, the condition stated relies on the seller's assessment, and even small differences in the edges or surface noticeably change the price. A PSA card, on the other hand, carries an independently assigned grade that anyone can verify. At the same time, the slab protects the card from further wear.

The PSA grades from 1 to 10

PSA assesses centring, corners, edges and surface and sums this up in a single grade. Next to the number on the label is a short label:

PSA 10 GEM MT (Gem Mint): virtually flawless, the highest grade.
PSA 9 MINT: a single minor flaw, otherwise pristine.
PSA 8 NM-MT (Near Mint-Mint): slight traces that only show on close inspection.
PSA 7 NM and PSA 6 EX-MT: visible but minor wear, typical for well-preserved older cards.
PSA 5 EX to PSA 1 PR: noticeable signs of use. Often the affordable way to a certified copy of rare vintage cards.

In between, PSA also awards half grades, such as PSA 7.5. The grade, however, only describes the condition. How sought-after a card is depends on the artwork, set, edition and language.

Why PSA 10 and PSA 9 are so far apart in price

For in-demand cards, the gap between PSA 9 and PSA 10 is often larger than the small difference in condition would suggest. The reason is the rarity of the top grade: of many cards, only a small share of the submitted copies achieve a PSA 10. If you mainly want to own the card itself in very good condition, PSA 9 or PSA 8 often offers a more balanced ratio of condition to price. What to look out for when buying a PSA card

Label and card: the set, card number, language and edition on the label must match the card in the slab. A 1st Edition is explicitly noted on the label.
Certification number: every number can be checked in PSA's online verification tool.
Condition of the slab: scratches on the holder don't change the grade, but they stand out in a display case. The original photo shows you the holder exactly as it is.
Language and region: the same card appears in English, German and Japanese, often at very different prices. The language and region filters narrow this down.

These include vintage cards from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and Team Rocket, cards from the Neo era with their Shining Pokémon, EX and Gold Star cards, as well as modern Full Arts and Japanese promos. Get your own card graded or buy one already graded?

If you already own a card in good condition, you can have it assessed by PSA yourself. AMAZINGTOYS® is an Official PSA Dealer and handles the submission for you; drop-off happens in person at the Store in Zurich. PSA needs at least 120 and up to 180 working days for this, and you only find out the grade at the end. The process and prices are listed under PSA Grading Switzerland.

When buying an already graded card, on the other hand, you know the grade from the start and have the card without any waiting time. Especially for expensive vintage cards, that's the more predictable route.

Wie erkenne ich, ob eine PSA Karte echt ist?

Jede PSA Karte trägt auf dem Label eine Zertifikatsnummer. Diese Nummer lässt sich in der Online-Verifizierung von PSA nachschlagen, dort stehen Karte und Note, wie PSA sie erfasst hat. Stimmen diese Angaben mit dem Label und der Karte im Slab überein, ist das der wichtigste Anhaltspunkt. Achte zusätzlich darauf, dass der Halter unbeschädigt und nicht geöffnet ist.

Bekomme ich genau die Karte, die auf dem Foto zu sehen ist?

Ja. Bei jeder PSA Karte im Shop handelt es sich um ein Originalfoto des jeweiligen Slabs. Du erhältst genau die Karte mit genau diesem Label und dieser Zertifikatsnummer, nicht ein vergleichbares Exemplar.
