Year: December 1971
Condition: Fine, FN, 6.0
Sub-Mariner #44 by Gerry Conway (story) and Marie Severin (art), a classic from the early Bronze Age of comics. The issue is in good used condition.
The character of Sub-Mariner was created by Bill Everett and first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 in October 1939. Together with Captain America and the Human Torch, he was one of the three superheroes who appeared at the then Timely Comics (the forerunner of the Marvel Comics publisher) and fought against the Axis powers on the comic pages during World War II. He is a hybrid - half human, half Atlantean - and has the ability to breathe underwater. He became popular again when Jack Kirby and Stan Lee dusted him off in 1962 in Fantastic Four #4 and breathed new life into him in the Silver Age. After sharing the comic Tales to Astonish with Iron Man in the mid-1960s, he got his own title in 1968. Gene Colan and John Buscema visually defined Sub-Mariner in the Silver Age of comics and gave him the characteristic look he is known for today.
