Description
Splatoon is a third-person shooter set in a world of colour. Players control Inklings, characters who move around and fire ink from a weapon, but who can also transform into a squid to swim through ink. The game is controlled via the GamePad, using the left analogue stick to move. In addition to the standard aiming options, gyroscopic motion control is supported by tilting the device, with the right analogue stick used to look left or right, and the triggers to fire a machine-gun-like weapon and throw large bombs. The game offers a wide range of primary and secondary weapons that can be equipped before battle. These include standard weapons, rifles, bombs, grenades, a giant paint roller, and items such as a shield, enemy detectors and ink strikes. The game can also be played with a Pro Controller or Classic Controller, optionally in conjunction with a MotionPlus-compatible Wii Remote.
Shooting ink colours the environment, and areas covered in a colour can be crossed quickly by transforming into a squid. In squid form the character cannot shoot, but moves faster, can hide, and can also climb vertical surfaces and swim through grates. Ink ammo is not unlimited and is refilled by transforming into a squid. Characters can jump, even in squid form, with a stronger sprint jump. Enemies fire ink in a different colour, which also covers the environment. This slows characters down in normal form and cannot be swum through in squid form, so they must counter it by painting over it with their own colour. There is a limited amount of health, which regenerates by seeking cover.
The game is set in Inkopolis, which serves as a central hub. It gives access to various types of battles and characters, offering improved weapons and gear for aesthetic customisation. Taking part in battles earns experience points for levelling up, as well as a currency that can be used to buy new items. In the single-player part of the game, Cap'n Cuttlefish asks you to recover the Zapfish, the power source of Inkopolis, from the Octarians. It consists of a series of levels that are completed by reaching the Zapfish at the end. In this mode only the standard weapon is used, but it is upgraded and improved by collecting power eggs within the levels. The environments offer platforming challenges and enemies to defeat. Each of the 27 levels also contains a hidden scroll with background information about the game world. Levels are grouped into areas, and a boss must be defeated at the end of each area. This is rewarded with blueprints, so-called sunken scrolls, which can be exchanged for new options at a weapon shop.
Alongside the single-player campaign, the game supports local one-on-one multiplayer matches in the Battle Dojo. Online multiplayer games are split into regular and ranked battles, where maintaining a high rank through wins provides more experience and currency. Matches are played as four-on-four games with two teams, each with its own colour. Regular battles feature Turf War mode, offering three-minute games in which each team tries to cover more of the map in its team colour before time runs out. Ranked battles feature Splat Zones, a king-of-the-hill game type in which teams fight to hold a specific area in their team colour to bring a counter down to zero and win the game. When time runs out, the team with the fewest counters wins. Further game modes (Rainmaker, Tower Control) were added later as DLC. There are also special events available only for a limited time. Splatting opponents until their health runs out sends them back to their team's respawn point. The GamePad can be used to access a map and instantly move to a teammate's location or help with aiming.
The game integrates Miiverse to post messages that appear in-game as graffiti on walls. Amiibo Splatoon sets can unlock additional missions as well as extra gear and a bonus mini-game upon completion.
