Description
In 1978, Earth successfully repelled an invasion from outer space thanks to the "Tank". The tank was based on alien technology found when a reconnaissance ship crashed years earlier. Now, over 20 years later, a new tank has been developed based on the technology recovered during the 1978 invasion. And not a moment too soon, as the Invaders are back! Space Invaders is another remake of a classic Arcade game by Activision (see Battlezone and Asteroids). But this time, Activision licensed a game from Taito rather than Atari. The game stays true to its roots but adds many power-ups and enemies. You can face off against the Invaders either solo or with a second player, marching in orderly rows and columns across the screen at one of three difficulty levels. You start at Pluto and work your way through the solar system to Mars, then Venus, and finally Earth. There are four ordinary aliens (red, green, blue and yellow) and seven less ordinary ones. If you shoot four Invaders of the same type in a row, you receive special one-shot power-ups. As in the original game, there are also motherships flying overhead, but if you hit them, you can obtain other useful power-ups such as shields or double shots. And after you've repelled several waves on each planet, you face off against a unique boss. If you manage to complete the game, you can play a reproduction of the original coin-op arcade game.
