Description
The simplest way to describe Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing would be to call it a Super Mario Kart clone. But instead of famous Nintendo characters like Mario and Bowser, players drive with Sonic, Billy Hatcher, Dr. Eggman and 17 other more or less well-known figures from the SEGA game library. However, the core of the game remains the same: in a normal race, the player must compete against seven other racers while using both his racing skills and one of the various power-ups scattered on the track, such as a boxing glove to shoot ahead drivers out of the way or mines to destroy his pursuers. Since all cars drive at the same speed regardless of which character they belong to, charging the boost through drifts is the most important thing to reach first place. There are also tricks to get a turbo boost. However, the decision of which racer and which car to use affects which All-Star action is available to the player. While Sonic the Hedgehog transforms into Super Sonic for a short time, giving him a large amount of additional speed, Billy Hatcher lays egg shells on the track to hinder his pursuers. Like all other power-ups, the All-Star action must first be collected on the track before it can be used. The game offers several different game modes. In single-player mode, the player can either do a time trial, a single race, a Grand Prix or one of the many dozens of missions available that require the player to complete many different objectives, other than just being first in a race. These objectives include reaching the finish line with a long drift, rolling over as many crows as possible or reaching the finish line without destroying any pots and much more. The multiplayer mode consists of a split-screen mode for up to four players and an online mode (not available in the PC version). Completing a mission or winning a race in single-player or multiplayer mode earns the player SEGA miles, which can be used in the internal shop to unlock additional characters and tracks. The Xbox 360 version also includes Banjo-Kazooie from Rare in addition to the SEGA characters and tracks – hence the additional subtitle. More
