Description
Metroid: Other M follows recent Metroid console releases by being developed by a studio outside Nintendo, much like the Metroid Prime trilogy. However, Other M was not handed to a studio that was a newcomer at the time: it was developed by the experienced developer Team Ninja, known for Dead or Alive and the Ninja Gaiden series. Other M takes place chronologically after the events of Super Metroid and before the events of Metroid Fusion. After a recovery introduction and a cinematic retelling of the final moments of Super Metroid, the game begins with Samus intercepting and investigating a distress call. The distress call comes from a space station (similar to Metroid Fusion) in trouble. Samus reunites with her former military commander Adam Malkovich and joins his team of Federation soldiers to investigate the station in distress. In the game's story, it is assumed that Samus already possesses many of her suit's abilities (such as missiles and bombs), but only uses them once Adam authorises her to do so. The game returns to the side-scrolling gameplay of classic 2D Metroid games, but in a hybrid form that also includes first-person shooter segments (by simply pointing the Wii remote at the television) and even third-person "over-the-shoulder" segments for very small rooms. Aiming at enemies is usually just a matter of proper targeting, and certain shots occur automatically in 2D mode. In first-person perspective, Samus can target enemies and fire missiles. The Morph Ball returns as expected and functions similarly to the popular Metroid Prime titles, with the camera zooming extremely close in tight environments. The over-the-shoulder third-person view is mainly used for exploring small rooms and not for combat. The game is played only with the Wii remote without the Nunchuk accessory. As is customary in the series, Samus can upgrade her armour and weapons again by collecting items she finds while exploring the game. Add to this the fact that she uses nothing before being authorised to do so. New to the series is the extensive use of cinematic cutscenes that tell the backstory of Samus, her past with Adam Malkovich and her former military connection. Additionally, there is – rare for a Nintendo title – plenty of spoken dialogue from the title character – both in cutscenes and in monologues where Samus' perceptions and feelings are detailed throughout the story. For the first time, Samus Aran's general mobility more closely matches her Super Smash Bros. form than in most previous Metroid titles, and her combat arsenal now includes finishing moves, evasion manoeuvres and grab attacks. All new moves are designed for simplicity and speed – sometimes they work automatically when the right button is pressed – and combat in the game has the arcade feel of Team Ninja's recent Ninja Gaiden titles. Pre-order copies of the game came with an "Art Folio" containing sixteen cards featuring motifs from the game, with descriptions on the back. The cards are approximately the same size and shape as a DVD case. Less
