Description
In Grand Theft Auto, the player takes on the role of a petty criminal trying to make it big with the mafia. The path to success leads through stealing cars, completing jobs for gangsters and general antisocial behaviour. The plot moves through six levels spread across three different cities, each based on a real US city: Liberty City (inspired by New York City), San Andreas (inspired by San Francisco) and Vice City (inspired by Miami). To complete a level, a certain score must be reached. Stealing cars and crashing into traffic, running over pedestrians and killing police increases the score, but big points are earned through jobs. Answering calls or getting into special cars brings mission assignments, from simple "steal-a-car" tasks to supporting bank robberies or carrying out assassinations. Completing a mission significantly increases the score and also increases the multiplier, so completing the next crime earns even more points. Criminal behaviour has its price, of course: if police witness a crime, the player's wanted level increases. At the lowest level, a single police vehicle can pursue, whilst at the highest level entire car convoys chase the player, police set up roadblocks and shoot at them. The only way to escape the cops is to find a paint shop and get a new paint job with new number plates. However, this costs money, which is deducted from the player's score. But even if you die or get arrested, that's not the end. The player has multiple lives, and if they land in prison, they simply have all weapons and armour removed, and the point multiplier is lowered. The entire gameplay is viewed from a top-down perspective, which zooms out when driving to provide a better overview at high speeds. The cities are many screens large and can be freely explored. Crates are scattered throughout the cities, which can contain weapons (from pistols to rocket launchers), armour or other bonus items: extra lives, police bribes (which can lower the wanted level to zero) and "Get out of jail free" cards (which allow you to keep the point multiplier and weapons when arrested). Dozens of different vehicles are available, each with unique properties: a bus drives very differently from a sports car.
