Description
F-Zero is a futuristic racing game set in the year 2560. The player chooses one of four available hovercars and can then compete against other hovercars in one of the game modes – "Training" or "Grand Prix". In "Practice" mode, the player selects a track on which to battle another hovercar for victory (if desired, there can be no rival at all). In "Grand Prix" the player must complete a series of races against multiple competitors. Each race consists of five laps. The hovercar has a limited energy meter that represents the health of the machine and decreases whenever the hovercar collides with track boundaries and other players. When the energy meter is empty, the hovercar explodes and the player loses the race. Near the starting line there are repair areas that restore power to the player's hovercar when driven into them. The tracks contain many more or less dangerous hazards, such as ice fields or landmines. After each lap, the player receives a "Super Jet" that can be activated at any time to gain a brief speed boost. The hovercar can hold up to three Super Jets and use them as needed. For completing a lap, the player also receives points that give them a life when enough have been collected. The player can lose a life in Grand Prix mode if their hovercar explodes, if their hovercar somehow falls off the track, or if they fall too far behind the other racers.
