Bart Simpson goes into a video game shop and buys a new, violent Grand Theft Scratchy game, which his mother Marge immediately confiscates. Suddenly, a video game manual lands right in front of him. Miraculously, after reading the manual, the members of the Simpson family discover that each of them has a unique superpower. However, using these powers draws the attention of the aliens Kang and Kodos, who decide to invade Earth. Now the unlikely superheroes must not only protect the town of Springfield from an alien attack, but also uncover the true reason behind their newly acquired powers - and perhaps their very existence.

The Simpsons Game is a 3D action game with platforming elements and puzzle-solving, based on the long-running cartoon. The game is divided into 16 episodes, each featuring cutscenes reminiscent of the original Simpsons TV series. Each episode takes place in a different setting. Some of the scenarios are based on Springfield, while others take the player into meta-virtual worlds. Some episodes parody a popular game or genre, with names like Medal of Homer or Neverquest. In each level, two members of the Simpson clan work together to reach the goal. Players must switch back and forth between each family member's unique powers to complete the level. Most versions of the game support two-player co-op play.
