The mining ship USG Ishimura sends a distress signal to the Concordance Extraction Corporation during a mining operation on the planet Aegis VII. Another ship is dispatched to investigate the cause of the signal; however, as it attempts to dock with the Ishimura, a system malfunction causes it to collide with the vessel. The crew is attacked by terrifying monsters. Only three people survive, including an engineer named Isaac Clarke. It looks as though the ship can barely sustain itself, as many of its systems are badly damaged. Isaac is the only one who knows how to repair them, and his two companions send him on a mission to find a way to restore things to normal and uncover the truth behind the horrifying events.
Dead Space is a third-person sci-fi shooter with survival horror elements. The player controls Isaac, explores the ship and fights reanimated corpses known as Necromorphs. Combat is heavily based on so-called “strategic dismemberment”, which forces the player to cut off the Necromorphs' limbs or body parts in order to defeat them. Damaging a specific part of a Necromorph's body can allow the player to kill it, change its attack patterns, or even make it more dangerous.
Many of the weapons in the game are improvised mining tools, such as a circular saw, a plasma cutter, a hydrazine torch used as a flamethrower, and others. All weapons have a secondary firing mode; for example, the plasma cutter can be rotated to cut vertical limbs more efficiently. Isaac can also use special abilities that let him slow down enemies or pick up and throw objects from a distance. In some sections of the game, Isaac floats in a zero-gravity environment. Ammunition and tools can be found while exploring or purchased at automated stores on the ship. Workbenches can be used to upgrade Isaac's weapons and armour.
