Captain Marvel #49

Comic: Captain Marvel #49
Language: English
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Year: March 1977
Condition: Very Fine Minus, VF-, 7.5

Captain Marvel #49 with a story by Scott Edelman (writer) and Al Milgrom (artist). A Captain Marvel adventure from the Bronze Age of comics. (This is still the original Captain Marvel, not Carol Danvers, who later became Captain Marvel and also plays the Captain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.) The comic is in good condition.

In December 1967, Captain Marvel first appeared in issue 12 of the comic series Marvel Super Heroes. Marvel Comics was determined to secure the superhero's name, because another Captain Marvel - also known as SHAZAM - was causing trouble at the competition. Since Marvel's Captain wore a completely different costume in unassuming shades of green and was also an alien (Kree), there were no legal issues. After just his second appearance (in Marvel Super Heroes #13), he got his own ongoing series. From 1968 to 1979, a total of 62 issues of his adventures were published. Comic legend Gene Colan (1926-2011) drew the first stories in his typically dynamic style. In issue 17, the Captain underwent a radical costume change and finally got a red-and-dark-blue costume that links many iconic superheroes. (DC's Superman and Marvel's Thor also wear red and blue, for example.) Fun fact on the side: Captain Marvel is one of the few superheroes (perhaps the only one?) who died and actually stayed dead. Superhero deaths have become rather inflationary in recent years - except the heroes don't really stay dead. They always come back. Not this Captain, though. Jim Starlin let the Kree Mar-Vell die unspectacularly and ordinarily of cancer in 1982, in the graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel.
