Captain Marvel #38
Comic: Captain Marvel #38Language: English
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Year: May 1975
Condition: Fine Plus, FN+, 6.5
Captain Marvel #38 features a story by Steve Englehart (writer) and Al Milgrom (artist). The masterful inking comes from comic legend Klaus Janson. (Here it's still the original Captain Marvel, not Carol Danvers, who later became Captain Marvel and also portrays the Captain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.) A very nicely drawn issue in good used condition.
In December 1967, Captain Marvel made his first appearance in issue 12 of the comic series Marvel Super Heroes . Marvel Comics was determined to secure the superhero's name, because another Captain Marvel - also known as SHAZAM - was causing trouble at the competition. Since Marvel's Captain appeared in a completely different costume in unassuming shades of green and was also an alien (Kree), there were no legal issues. Already after his second appearance (in Marvel Super Heroes #13), he got his own comic series. From 1968 to 1979, a total of 62 issues of his adventures were published. Comic legend Gene Colan (1926-2011) drew the first stories in his signature dynamic style. In issue 17, the Captain underwent a radical costume change and finally received a red and dark blue costume that links many iconic superheroes. (DC's Superman and Marvel's Thor, for example, also wear red and blue.) Fun fact on the side: Captain Marvel is one of the few superheroes (perhaps the only one?) who died and actually stayed dead. Superhero deaths have become quite inflationary in recent years - only the heroes never really stay dead. They always come back. Not this Captain, though. Jim Starlin had the Kree Mar-Vell die unspectacularly and ordinarily of cancer in 1982 in the graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel.
