Description

Captain Marvel #24

Comic: Captain Marvel #24
Language: English
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Year: January 1973
Condition: Fine, FN, 6.0

Captain Marvel #24 with a story by Marv Wolfman and artwork by Wayne Boring. The cover was drawn by Gil Kane. (This is still the original Captain Marvel, not Carol Danvers, who later became Captain Marvel and also plays the Captain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.) The comic is in a used condition.

In December 1967, Captain Marvel first appeared in issue 12 of the comic series Marvel Super Heroes. Marvel Comics was keen to secure the superhero's name, as another Captain Marvel – also known as SHAZAM – was causing trouble over at the competition. Since Marvel's Captain wore a completely different costume in unassuming shades of green and was also an alien (Kree), there were no legal issues. After only his second appearance (in Marvel Super Heroes #13), he got his own comic series. From 1968 to 1979, a total of 62 issues of his adventures were published. Comic legend Gene Colan (1926-2011) drew the first stories in his signature dynamic style. In issue 17, the Captain underwent a radical costume change, finally receiving a red and dark blue costume that connects him to many iconic superheroes. (DC's Superman and Marvel's Thor, for example, also wear red and blue.) A fun fact on the side: Captain Marvel is one of the few superheroes (perhaps the only one?) who died and actually stayed dead. Superhero deaths have become quite inflated in recent years – but the heroes never really stay dead. They always come back. Not this Captain, though. Jim Starlin had the Kree Mar-Vell die unspectacularly and ordinarily of cancer in 1982, in the graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel.
