Modern Warfare 3 is the eighth main instalment of the Call of Duty series and the third part of the Modern Warfare subseries and is a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In this first-person shooter, the story picks up at the end of the previous game as the Russian invasion of the United States continued, but the war has now engulfed Europe, which the United Kingdom, France and Germany are joining as allies of the USA. Throughout the campaign, the player once again assumes the role of various characters, including "Soap" MacTavish from the previous game, but also some new ones, including Frost and Sandman, members of the US Delta Force. In addition to the main story campaign with its scripted gameplay, MW3 offers two cooperative game modes. The first is Spec Ops, a return from the previous game. Here players must complete short missions and receive a star based on their performance. The second is the new Survival mode, in which players must repel various waves of enemy soldiers that become increasingly difficult. The multiplayer part offers the usual game modes (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, ...). In addition to these modes, several new game modes have been integrated. The first is called "Kill Confirmed" and requires the player to find the dog tags of defeated opponents so the kill is registered. The opposing team can also retrieve the dog tag to deny the player's kill. In another game, Team Defender, the objective is to capture a single flag on the map and hold it as long as possible to score the most points. There are also several pre-made modes for private matches, such as Infection (kill enemies to recruit them), Drop Zone (hold an area for points and care packages), Team Juggernaut (each team has an AI Juggernaut character) and Gun Game (each player starts with only a pistol and three bullets and earns additional weapons and bullets by getting kills). The killstreak reward system from previous games for multiplayer mode has been replaced in favour of the new Pointstreak system. Points are no longer earned solely through collecting kills, but also through completing additional challenges. The rewards are divided into three assault packages: Assault, Support and Specialist, each with new options and benefits when unlocked. Along with the game comes the Call of Duty: Elite Service, a service that tracks player statistics and features social networking and smartphone integration.
