Description
A troop of Colonial Marines on their way to Earth from a training mission are awakened from hypersleep by a distress signal from the Thanatos, a massive space freighter. Upon receiving orders to board the enormous vessel and investigate the situation, they find themselves in a nightmare: a massive invasion of Xenomorphs. The mission is clear: free the ship of enemies and rescue all survivors. Aliens: Thanatos Encounter is a top-down action game, with its main inspiration drawn from the second film in the Alien series. While the goal across more than a dozen levels is typically simply to survive and find the exit, some levels require specific objectives to be achieved. These might consist of simply killing all aliens and rescuing all survivors, or finding a keycard that unlocks the level's exit. Before each level, the player can choose from five different characters, who differ in speed and endurance (i.e. health). Should a Marine's health be depleted, he is not killed but captured. Another character can attempt a rescue and has 200 seconds to do so. If the captured soldier is not found within this timeframe, he is removed from the roster for the remainder of the game. When fighting the aliens, the Marines can draw upon a variety of weapons, most of which play an important role in the film. In addition to a standard pistol, the levels contain shotguns, pulse rifles, flamethrowers, grenade launchers and smartguns. Available from the start is the motion tracker radar, which displays both human survivors and enemy aliens. However, it requires a free hand, so using two weapons simultaneously or one of the heavier weapons is not possible when the tracker is equipped. Another item that reappears from the film is the Powerloader (famously piloted by Ripley in the finale). Its use slows the Marine but simultaneously increases his health. Enemies include the entire lifecycle of the aliens, from Facehuggers through Chestbursters to a variety of adult Alien Warriors and a Queen. Early in the game, they only injure the player if he runs into them, but in later stages they can spit acid. Lost health can be restored by collecting and using first aid kits. Game progress is saved using passwords.
