Description
The Adventures of Tintin: The Game is a game based on the adventures of Tintin and Snowy, a series of classic comic books created by Belgian artist Hergé between 1929 and 1983. It is released as a companion game to Steven Spielberg's 2011 animated film The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and follows the story. The plot is based on events from various comics, including The Crab with the Golden Claws, Red Rackham's Treasure and The Secret of the Unicorn. The game is a side-scrolling 2D platformer with small puzzle elements, where the aim is to defeat opponents and find a way to reach the next area. Tintin can sneak around, steal keys, hide in barrels, throw objects, roll, grab ledges and jump to reach platforms. Combat is based on sneaking takedowns, but there are also regular melee fights. In later levels, the guards are well-armed and the player must use objects in the environment such as banana peels or wet paint to defeat them. Occasionally there is a level boss. Tintin can also send Snowy to sneak through gaps or order Haddock to stand on a pressure plate. The solo mode begins at a flea market in Belgium, where young reporter Tintin buys a model ship. Shortly afterwards, a collector appears who wants to buy it from him for ten times the price. Fascinated, Tintin is taken to an expert who tells him that it is a replica of the Unicorn, a three-masted ship from the fleet of Charles II, which was sunk in 1676 in an attack by Red Rackham from its own captain. Tintin wants to find out why the captain sank his own ship and finds a document inside the model, but the collector returns and secretly steals the ship from him. With the help of Snowy, he tracks down the collector's house, and from there the search for the secret of the Unicorn begins. He lands on the ship SS Karaboudjan, where he meets Captain Haddock. From there they travel to the palace of Ben Salaad, then to Bagghar, a fictional port city in Morocco, and finally back to the hometown of Marlinspike. The game is interrupted by small sequences that move away from 2D platforming. These 3D segments include motorcycle fights during a car chase, airplane flights, scent tracking with Snowy, diving and on-rail sword fights that take place aboard the Unicorn in the past. The game can be played in a separate co-operative mode with Tintin, Haddock and the opera singer Bianca Castafiore. In these separate levels, players must work together as each character has a different ability. Tintin uses a grappling hook, Haddock moves boxes and breaks walls, and Castafiore can perform a double jump and break glass. There is also a challenge mode where players can compete against each other.
