Amazingly Freaky Moments in Comic History No. 1

Firestorm, Vol. 1, No. 4. It's September, 1982, and the lovely Killer Frost has turned New York City into a block of ice. The whole town's frozen: buildings, people, pets — everyone and everything.

She tells Firestorm she'll defrost the Big Apple if he'll bring her Curt Nolland, a mustached movie star (and obvious stand-in for Burt Reynolds: a billboard on page 4 depicts Nolland in a movie called Smokey and the Thief).

"Now that I'm a queen, I need an royal escort. And not just ANY escort, mind you …"

I waited for Firestorm to suggest Tom Selleck, but instead, he somehow convinces Red Tornado to dress up like Burt Reynolds and together they fly down from the JLA satellite to meet Killer Frost, who treats RT to a high-velocity arctic blast.

Amazingly Freaky Moment: Red Tornado's Burt Reynolds costume being ripped away from his red android body. It's disturbing as hell. Imagine flipping through an Avengers title and seeing Storm relieving the Vision of a George Clooney mask!

Amazingly Freaky Moments in Comic History No. 2

The West Coast Avengers, Vol. 2, No. 38. My comics-oriented pals are well aware of my mania for Avengers West Coast. I am unabashedly nuts for that particular title because it's the absolute pinnacle of '80s superhero weirdness.

Case in point: WCA number 38 (November, 1988). An extra-dimensional villain called The Defiler (an evil '80s heavy metal dude) plays huge arena concerts and feeds on the youthful energy of American teen rock fans.

Amazingly Freaky Moment: Hank Pym sprinkles "Pym particles" on a skateboard (which grows to the size of a freight truck), a horde of abducted teens climb on, and Iron Man uses a giant rope to pull them from The Defiler's dimension back to ours.
